Off the Hook...For Now

It's an interesting irony. A service that has provided reliable back up communications through Katrina and Rita is at the same time a risky proposition for 911 callers.

Just a day before the deadline that would have required that at least 10,000 internet phone users be cut off, the FCC has extended the deadline to October 31 for providers to receive confirmation of their understanding about the 911 risks.


Fortunately, the FCC is open-minded enough to realize that suddenly cutting off users would lead to more challenges and most VoIP providers been able to deliver watered down 911 services in most cases.
