National Communications System (NCS) Services
The NCS offers defense industries priority access to surviving infrastructure in the event of a regional disaster. NCS also coordinates priority restoration and provisioning . Authorized emergency communications are permitted to registered command personnel on terrestrial (wired) networks through the Government Emergency Telecommunications Service (GETS) and via Wireless Priority Service (WPS). These services are available to governmental authorities, key government contractors, financial institutions, hospitals and select industries with governmental sponsorship. All users are cautioned to review their disaster recovery plans in light of these new services and eligible firms should immediately register critical communications circuits, and provision WSP cellular phones for senior staff. All other users must be prepared to amend current disaster recovery plans in light of restricted communications capability after major disasters. Users should look at a more diversified communications infrastructure that uses Internet services, email, VoIP, instant messaging, satellite phones, and other non-traditional communications options.
